Avoid the zone-out zone: make live events work online

When we asked clients and business allies about the marketing tactics that are working in 2019, they told us that live, in-person events are an invaluable source of leads—often the most valuable—whether they’re offering software, hardware, or services.

“But it’s not just a black and white question,” says Megan Tederick, Senior Manager, Product Marketing & Strategy for Cognizant. “‘Do digital events work for you,

Add a Fresh Coat of Paint to Your Marketing Assets

If you’ve ever sold a house or are looking to do so, one of the first things people will tell you is to add a fresh coat of paint—to just about everything. New paint is bright. It covers up dirt and generally forces you to repair a whole bunch of dings, scratches, and other flaws that make a house look older.

The same is true for your marketing assets.

The importance of relaying the business value in technology

It’s an exciting time to be a technology writer—and to be working with clients who are at the forefront of the technology they’re offering. Having the opportunity to help our clients tell their stories in meaningful ways is a privilege—and a challenge. That’s because marketing-focused technology content has shifted in recent years. It wasn’t always so, but today’s businesses recognize technology as a change agent, and not just a necessary cost of business.

Defined Personas: Does your blog target the right personality?

Continuing our discussion on developing and executing a successful blog strategy, we mentioned that having defined personas is important to both your target audience and your blog writers. A persona is a description of your ideal target prospects and customer(s) for your offerings. In the old days, the idea would be to focus only on target markets and their requirements. However, that definition is too broad and does not include the wide diversity of audiences that can be accessed.

Simple tips for successful webinars and presentations

Lessons learned pre-internet era still apply

By Brian Silverman

In the ‘90s, I had the pleasure of helping create the IBM Internet Briefing Center. I was part of a group of subject matter experts who were hired to become the hosts and presenters for IBM solution presentations at the beginning of the Internet era.

Because the team came from the field, labs, and development centers of IBM, we attended what we fondly called “charm school”

From late-night phone calls to buckets of ice: Social media has potential

There’s a commercial my family stops to watch on the DVR every single time it comes on. It’s the “It’s Jake, from State Farm” commercial, which actually started running way back in 2011! There’s just something hilarious about the wife catching her husband making a 3 a.m. call to his insurance agent and mistakenly saying, “She sounds hideous”—prompting his deadpan response, “Well, she’s a guy.” The misunderstanding feels just so universal.

Anyway,

Is Social Media More than Cute Cats and Dogs?

Having a preteen in the house means I’m bombarded by the after effects of various companies’ social media marketing – especially if it involves cute animals. For example, a video posted by buzzfeed and making the rounds of the older elementary and middle school set is a TidyCats Lightweight Kitty Litter social media play. The cat narrates a helpful video on “how to take care of your human”, since we humans are “sadly hairless” and “cats must curl up on our faces at night or humans will freeze to death”.

What you can learn about tweeting and social media

Over the last several years, we’ve had lots of discussions with clients about what role social media should play in their marketing.  Some companies are avid social media followers and participants—others still aren’t comfortable with social media in their marketing mix.  Sometimes this reluctance seems to be based in a “how would my company benefit from that?” type of mentality.

At the end of 2013, the The New York Times took a look at how the twitter side of its social media efforts was going,
